8 bit or 16

Can someone enumerate the general advantages of a 16bit microcontroller over a 8 bit one

-Thanks

Re: 8 bit or 16, better 32!

I think if you use 8-bit microcontrollers for your projects and need more speed
and memory it is better to jump directly to 32 bit, no 16, especially, that the 32-bit
prices are approaching the 8-bits. You can look to ATMEL and PHILIPS and more.

Re: 8 bit or 16

i agree with vdaniel and i believe thats what motorolla also did. it jumped straight from 8-bit to 32-bit because the transition from 8-bit to 16-bit didnt promise any substantial gain.

8 bit or 16

8 bit MCU's are suited for small applications where precession is not important, cost, size and power are more important and if you need simple sequential control or operations with little mathematics at low speed 8 bit MCU are a good choice you will only go for 16 bit or 32 bit processors if you have pheripherals like ADC, DAC ,DISPLAY which uses 16 or 32 bit data.
