Well if you want to do anything of moderately high power (>1Kw) or high voltage (>300V) then you might be limited by the availability of components that will meet spec. So if you want to do anything like that, you should assess what high power devices you have lying around that you could use (large capacitors, IGBTs, MOSFETs, inductors, etc).
