Suggestions for a hardware Internet kill switch

Hi all. I'd like to make a box with two ethernet ports that sits between my computer and router, that allows me to turn my internet access on or off.

(Yes, I know I can do this in software -- I want a piece of hardware, though).

My initial though was something like an Atmel Tiny hooked up to a few transistors working as switches. It was suggested that this might introduce problems into the line, though, and that I should look into finding an ethernet controller IC.

I've managed to find a few already (I just googled 'ethernet controller chip') but I though I'd ask around and see if anyone had any suggestions about a specific product that could do what I want.

Again, the *only* function I'm looking for is something that will act as an ethernet on/off switch. If I could do this with transistors, I would (I might still give it a try).

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

you can do this with a simple interrupter with 4 circuits ... no need for any electronics in that !

Hi,
Why then, what is the difference pls between the physically switch off & pull the cable!?
If you reconnect/plug it: it will function (usually) as everytime...

What type of transport speeds are you talk about?

Depending on the speed of the Ethernet you may or may not be able to use a mechanical ST4P switch:

10Base-T - Maybe
100Base-T - Maybe, Maybe Not
1000Base-T - Most Likely Not

The amount of crosstalk, chatter and switch bounce could be very significant especially on a 1000Base-T network. I have to agree with karesz, pull the plug!

If you are contemplating a solid state relay or transistor based switch, why not use a managed ethernet switch? You can manually shutdown individual ports through a serial link to the console port. This would preserve the integrity of the network, while still guarantying absence of network traffic.
