Streaming a/v begins with capture and compression. This is typically done by a frame grabber with audio capability. The frame grabber captures (digitizes) the analog video (and audio) and then compresses the raw digital streams into formats such as mpeg-1/2/4 or mjpeg. The a/v streams are then multiplexed so that they can be sent together out on a common communication interface.

Next, the multiplexed stream must be sent out on the communication interface. This could be anything, but ethernet is quite popular because of its wide availability. To do this on ethernet, a "stream server" is used. The stream server packetizes the muxed stream, typically by using RTP/IP, and then unicasts or multicasts the stream out onto the "ether." Stream servers often support SDP (session description protocol) as well to make it easier for clients to connect to the stream.
