I have seen these rotary switches that have a stepper motor mounted on the back of them

What are these rotary switches called that have stepper motors to enable or advance the switching?

What are they used for?

I hope this is what you mean:
this are switches with adaptive force feedback to make the manual input more intuitive and you don´t have to look on a display.

Imagine: in a car the driver has to do some inputs in the navigation system. He wants to selecet the fourth item in a list of 6 items.
The user rotates the switch and the stepper give a feedback for every item like a catch spring in a mechanical rotary switch.
At both ends of the list the stepper gives an increased feedback to the user like a stop pin in a mechanical rotary switch.
(but everything is controllable with software)
So the user can feel the end of both lists and can feel every single item while keeping eyes on the road.

The Rotary switches have a stepper motor on the back of them. You push one button and the switch will move to the next position because the stepper motor, steps through each position of the switch

what are these types of rotary switches are called or used for?
