Stepper Motor getting Heat

I'm using hybrid uni polar stepper. Step angle=1.8 degree, Coil resistance=2.9 Ohm,Current=1.2 A, Voltage=3.48.





Base resistor=1 Kohm.

1 pulse per second
 

Does the load torque require permanent 1.2A holding current?
 

That wasn't the question - does it need the power applying all the time or can the motor be stepped and then the current reduced or cut altogether. It depends on the application, if the motor has to resist outside forces trying to rotate it, you probably have no option but to maintain the current ('hold' the motor) but if it only has to supply motion to move something else, you may be able to reduce the drive level to it once it has reached position.
