From what I have read, STATCOM is used for reactive power compensation via capacitors in transmission lines. It is mentioned that there is a small amount of real power flow also to provide for the system losses.
Is it possible that the STATCOM control techniques can be utilized for controlling a bidirectional flow of real power mainly and not reactive power; say if instead of the capacitors, some kind of batteries have been put in the STATCOM device?

Thanks.
