how is a square wave created from sine waves

Hi,

I read that square wave is made up of sine waves ofvarious frequency(Gibb's phenomenon).. Is it really so?? It involves Harmonics..

But i couldn't understand the concept clearly.. If u got any tutorial which explains this concept clearly please give me the link..Please help me..

who invented the square wave

Check this image .... explains something I guess

invented the sine waves

dineshbabumm,
The previous responses probably answer your question. I have one additional comment, however. Gibbs phenomenon refers to the ringing that occurs on the leading and trailing edges of the synthesized square wave. This ringing will always occur with less than an infinite number of terms. As more harmonics are added, the duration of the ringing due to Gibb's phenomenon will decrease, but the amplitude can not be reduced below about 8%.

how are square waves made

All your replies helped me to understand it to certain extent.. Thanks for replying..

Ahmed Ragab's picture was very useful.. Kral's explanation about Gibb's phenomenon also helped me..

I learned that any periodic wave(Triangular, saw tooth wave, etc) is made up of sine waves.. Is it really so?? For square wave,it seems we have to consider odd harmonics.. Why is it so?? Can you please answer me..

Also if there is any pdf file regarding this concept, please give me the link.. I want to completely understand this phenomenon.. I couldn't understand it fully still.. Please help me..

Once again thanks for replying..

dineshbabumm,
"Google" on Fourier series. You'll find a wealth of material. As far as considering odd harmonics only is concerned, consider the following: Odd harmonics have symmetry with respect to the fundamental, i.e., harmonic peaks that occur with respect to the positive half-cycle of the fundamental, have a corresponding negative peak with respect to the negative half cycle of the fundamental. (See the pictures from the replies of the other respondents). The conclusion is that any symmetrical waveform consists only of odd harmonics. A Fourier analysis of any symmetrical waveform will confirm this.
