Sony remote control IC problem

Hello!
May I present you the following issue :
I have a Sony trinitron model KV 2185MT(does't really matter) and some of the remote control's functions are not working!
I suspect that the IC within it is partially destroyed. I am trying to find out what this Ic does(decode, encode, multiplex...), but I couldn't find out over the net and from Sony I've received an invitation at one of its repair centers, but I think I can handle it.
The Ic is a Nec 6600 GS.
If someone could provide me any information about this I would be grateful!

Other than fix the battery, there is little to do. Often the "soft" rubber keys corrode and do not make contact anymore. You could try using a pencil eraser to burnish the contacts underneath the keys. You can buy new ones at:
