Purchased a "new" soldering station model WELLER WESD51 from Amazon.

LED display scratched. Lovely.

Turned it on,

Works. But it sounds like our old fridge in the garage. It's quiet, but every few seconds it will make an oscillating noise. ...pretty sure this is what's keeping the iron at the desired temperature.

This is my first iron & I'm not sure whether to send it back or perhaps this is normal?

What's your sound like?

It's annoying.

Noise is generated from transformer.

There is several possibilities for the cause of this:
- Soldering station was kept long time in on state (several hours to one day-several days),
- Soldering station was often used on higher temperature for long time,
- Bad quality of complete product, bad transformer,...

This is just my assumptions.

Open soldering station and try to fix and consolidate transformer better.

Update:

Sent previous soldering iron back.

Received new one. Fired it up. Same noise!

I guess this comes standard on the Weller WESD51's:sad:

If you're moving about in a lab, you won't notice it, but in a quiet room it's audible.

boooooo Weller

I can't be the only one with a Weller WESD51. Someone tell me this is normal, lmao I'm paranoid. My previous Weller WED51 (Analog) did not make any audible noise.

Its not hard to find source of noise. Check transformer.

Maybe you receive some cloned product. They can write any name what you want.

i had the same problem, from what i found online the noise is from the magnetic switch.
from what i read from another post it states that when the tip reaches its set point the switch will open and you'll hear a click - it has something to do with the magnets curie point where the magnet loses its magnetism and will open the switch. and when the tip cools down the magnet recovers its magnetism and the switch closes. the annoying/weezing noise is the switch going on and off - trying to maintain its avg temperature
