I would like to place a 1206 LED on a board over top of a 0.052 hole so that when the LED is illuminated, the light shines through the hole. It seems some LED's are better than others at shining out the bottom.

Can anyone suggest an appropriate LED?

Here's one of about 50,000,000,000,000: Liteon LTST-C230YKT

Just do a search for bottom entry LED. It's easy, you should try it!
