Smart House - Computer Interfacing

Am trying to do a computer interfacing project - the idea is to use a computer keyboard to control appliances in the home like the stereo, bulbs, TV, etc.

The plan is to use the PC parallel port to interface with these devices through a micro controller.

Please if you have any links or any ebooks that could help, I'd be glad to have them. If there are any other ideas as to how to approach the issue, I'd be very glad to hear.
 

I think you can refer to Microsoft's Xp media center OS
You can use mouse and keyboard, even remote controller to control the PC.

search for "x10" and "smart home" terms here and in internet . There are ready to use modules to buy and example module (app note) from microchip site.
