Hi all i am new to this site so hope one of you would be able to help me. I have a shop and in the window i have toys moving up and down with fishing line attached to the product which goes over a hook on the top of the window then runs to a wiper motor that goes back and forth. This seems to work ok but doesnt look great and is very loud. Could anyone be able to help in what motor i should be using as i need the back and forth motion of a wiper motor and the set up i have is that the best way. i dont really understand all the different motors or cams so simple answers would be of great help.

A wiper motor is ideal because it's designed for longterm operation.

You can also try one or more cassette motors, with pulleys/ gearing.
Also various lengths of levers, etc.

* Strings winding and unwinding around spools, etc. Limit switches are an obvious way to reverse direction.

* Install cams/ hinges, below/ inside toys. Or one large cam can drive a number of contraptions.
To slow down speed, use gearing or pulleys. It may be difficult to achieve smooth motion.

wiper motors are meant for that purpose. But you said that noise level is the issue.

There are other solutions with DC motors , but you must construct the associated elctronic circuitry for the up/dn movement.

If there is some experience in the circuit construction then that can be done.
