This time I used TransistorAmp(http://en.transistoramp.de/) to design a common emitter amplifier with input impedance 1k and, after two attempts at finding the right output impedance that does not cause the BC347 to heat up too much, output impedance 100. Voltage gain is 10.
They say their version of a class A amp has better stability over a wider temperature range and I think I can detect a further improvement in sound quality with a little less hiss perhaps. It is certainly a little louder than the previous version based on the 3 transistor amplifier in ShortCircuits Volume 1, even without the class AB second stage.
I designed another version with an output impedance of 4k but there is insufficient power to drive the PC speakers. Will set up an audio modulated astable 555, plug this amp into the control pin and plug the 555 output into the speakers and see what happens.
It might be trivial stuff for you experts but this is so encouraging for a novice like me.
