Would passing the supply through one of these before it enters the input pin of the LM317 effect the performance of the LM317 in any way?

I have implemented my high current adjustable voltage reg with a protective diode on the input but it appears that it is causing the voltage from the reg to waver a bit around my target voltage.

Shorting the diode appears to improve matters.

I was trying to test this with alligator clip across the blobs of solder on the back - electrical contact may not have been ideal with this however.

No problems expectable if the required bypass capacitor is placed at the regulator input.

What is the voltage drop across LM317 in both cases?

Sorry it was a false alarm. I forgot that you must to have a minimum load on the output for it to regulate the voltage accurately and I had neglected to add such a load. Once I did the voltage output was steady although I did have to rectify a couple of soldering muck ups first.
