I think it will be easier if you use general remote control. Then try to find what kind of data that modulate from the remote. You can decide the function in the receiver with microcontroller.
General remotes, such as: television, DVD player use infra red modulation; and they have many button to be choose (more than 20). Usually, they use infra red modulation or RF.
If want to create this remote controller.You have to follow this step
1. Collect one remote controlled small toy car.
2. Open car & remote bring out both remote & receiving circuit.
3. Think about different working mechanism of this circuit.
This is easy.May be same ic used in both receiving & remote module.
(I cannot supply you any circuit diagram because circuit varies for different car
)
N.B.: If you want to make a 4 keys remote then you need not open or modify
remote circuit.
4. I use some D-flip flop(ic4013) with receiving circuit to perform switching.You can also use any microcontrollers to make it more functional.
(I add a pdf from kitsrus where rf module use to do this. This documentation help me most)
