relationship between motor current and pwm

Hello

How is the mathematical relationship between PWM signal and Output Voltage/Current in phase of a motor?

I was reading a paper about motor comntrol and calculation of losses. There it was written PWM signal duty is a function of phase angle, which equivalent to output voltage variation. How is it related?

Thanks for any inputs.
