Use an IR receiver IC (popular ones are made by Vishay and their part numbers begin with TSOPxxxx). The xxxx is a part number and a frequency. They have an IR photo-diode, a high gain amplifier, a bandpass filter for its frequency, a decoder and AGC that avoids interference.
