Dear All,
For SMD packages, We used to give Copper area on the PCB for heat dissipation (regulators ,MOSFETs Etc,). How to decide the size of copper area? Is there any calculation?

Thanks in Advance,

Regards,
Sakthi

hi
For regulators and mosfets, the amount of heat sink to be provided is usually given in the datasheet.
the datasheet says how much copper area should be poured for that component.
it usually says what ounce of copper to be used. Besides the datasheet information,
the copper area info. will also depend on the component location on the board.
As we use this copper to take out the heat from the component, if we can take more heat by radiation method (which depends on our pcb location), then less copper is needed. because copper takes heat through conduction.

hope this info. helps u. if so, click on helped me.

Regards

THERE IS , BUT I FORGET..REMEMBER THAT AFTER A RADIUS OF ABOUT HALF INCH, ADDING FURTHER COPPER HAS LITTLE EXTRA COOLING EFFECT

(woooops!...sorry about the capitals)

there is an application note on this.

by either

irf
or similar

If u know any application note regarding this, Plz post link
