hi, im looking to start some PIC projects and looking for cheap programmer to build at home.

thing is i dont know which programmer to build. im looking for a cheap and preferably programmed and powered by usb.

most important thing is, i dont need another programmer to program a chip to be used on the design.

ones that i know of:

**broken link removed**
JDM - seems to be rs232 which is okay

ICD2 USB
ICD2 clone - seems to be what im looking for, any reason i shouldn't use this?

GTP USB PIC PROGRAMMER (Open Source)
GTP USB - open source, i think i need to pre-program a pic for this o.0

i'm not sure which one is better.

Re: cheap PIC programmer

I reaslise that you mentioned building a programmer.

But, I would actually look at a PICkit 2 or a Pickit 2 clone, these are reasonable cheap on ebay. Whilst you can build you own pickit, it makes more sense to buy 1. You will know that the unit you have will work, is supported by MPlab and it is also USB based.

I have a pic programmer bought for € 13 in China.

He is working to full satisfaction.
I bought this specifically to pic16c745 to program.
for testing and programming them is the PICkit-3 a very good solution ~ € 50

are you saying the programmer you linked is a pic kit 3 clone?

also is it worth it investing in pickit 3 over pickit2? i understand the pickit3 suppose to support all new PICs, i want to ask has the hobby community found a way to update pickit2 to support new devices or will i need one if i wanted to use the newer chips.

also:

EEVblog #39 - Microchip PICkit 3 Programmer/Debugger Review - YouTube

this review says there are alot of problems with the pickit3, apparently microchip made changes to make it more like pickit2. i just wondering if the changes have actually been implemented or they just left it as it was.

Re: cheap PIC programmer

Buy or build PICKit 2 Clone. In market about 10eur, to make about 7-8eur.

For programming firmware chip use this easy to build programmer;

Later when some money comes up buy PICKIT3.

Re: cheap PIC programmer

kool thanks tpetar, very useful stuff, just a couple of questions

just missing the firmware, or do i get that from microchip?
also the chip used for firmware, what software do i use to flash it over parallel port.

Software for fd-art2003 is WinPic800_V3_59

Re: cheap PIC programmer

if possible can give us link WinPic800_V3_59.need it for 16f676/16f72 .

no it's just a programmer.
I also use an ICD2 clone and a pickit3.

I purchased the programmer to pic16c745 to programren (ith it or not supported by ICD2 pickit3)

ICD2 does not support the latest pic, hence pickit3

Can you give me the link of firmware(or complete system you have made) for PicKit2 and device installation process?
I downloaded an zip file of firmware but when i extract is the size of hex file becomes 90.85KB but as far as i know the size of flash memory of 18f2550 is 32KB so how can i write the firmware into PIC18F2550 flash memory?
In above i can see that you are using parallel port for programming the PIC which software are you using for this?

All works what I send. You cant look like that on hex size. In my post #9 is PIC18F2550 programmer. WinPIC800 3.59 is software.

You should read and better look posts with more attention.

In this thread I explain HEX size mismatch post #6 :

I have a k150 ICSP programmer identical with the one in the link, can you post a link to the software please? I cannot find it. The seller doesnt have one.
Thanks

PICKit 2 Clone with EEPROMs 24C512

Can program uC without PC from memoryzed firmware in EEPROMs, just with battery power supply and simple pressing on taster, indication of process status over led.

All others PICKit 2 Clone capabilities of programming and debugging are the same like at standard PICKit 2 Clone.

Forget the JDM! Unusable, incompatible and instabil. :( Try a willem or pickit2 clone.

the cheap and fast programmer is pickit, but only can program devices with FLASH not OTP devices

ok but you can't program all otp ics
