What are the voltage and current requirements of a basic mobile phone battery (nokia1100) ? Its printed as 3.7v on the battery but what about the current? Can i charge the battery with 3.7v and very low current at the expense of recharging time?

Mobile Phone Battery Dangerous Usages: [Notice]

Don't short-circuit. A short-circuit may cause severe damage to the battery.
Don't short circuit terminal or store your battery pack with metal parts.
Don't drop, hit or otherwise abuse the battery pack as this may result in the exposure of the cell contents, which are corrosive.
Don't expose the battery to moisture or rain.
It is normal to get warm when charging or normal use.
If it is getting too hot, there may be a problem with the device and qualified personnel should check it.

Requirements are....
4.7V or 5V maximum
350mA current..

High current will fry the cell...
You cannot charge the battery with 3.7V. Every cell have to be charged providing few more Volts than its EMF.

So if i give a current level of less than 350mA, it wont charge?

It will charge, but the charging time will be more..... 350mA is a standard amount of current for most mobile cells. You can charge it with 500mA current, but that will cause the cell to warm-up. It can explode....
Although, the cell will draw that highest current in the circuit which can be drawn by it.
If u can supply 5A of current, it will not draw the same.... It will charge with its highest capacity of energy input, and that will induce the current...

A simple battery model consists of a resistor(internal resistance) in series with back emf. This back EMF varies with battery usage.

You need to provide higher voltage than the battery back EMF. 3.7V is the nominal voltage, if you search on the net or you may already know that voltage of a battery falls as it depletes. Similarly, as you charge the battery its voltage increases. For the current to flow you need to have potential difference (ohms law). Problem with providing high currents is that batteries heat tend to heat up due to the internal resistance of the battery. Lithium batteries are particularly dangerous when heated.
