reading a dat file with matlab

matlab .dat files

hi, Im trying to read data from a .dat file using matlab, it contains 3.981.312 elements (1 byte each). So far I read the data but it says all the elements are zero so I must be doing something wrong. I would really aprecciate a hand....... if matlab is not the best way to go......then what is it?? Heres the data file:
