Question regarding Minimum channel between two macros in Floorplan.

I have read that, Minimum channel length must be maintained between two macros should be as below :

Distance between = (Total number of macro pins x Pitch of metal layer)/
two macros(D) (Total number of metal layer)


But how have they derived this formulae ? Can anyone please explain ?
