Some datasheets mention storage temperature. If they do, you'd better maintain that temperature. Here are some articles that you may find helpful.

I had some bad experiences with the generic 16x2 LCD. After being not used for a long time, they refused to show any texts. I simply had to toss them out and buy new ones.
