Hi I'm an Art student in college and I have an idea for one of my final pieces and would love some help bringing into existence.

I want to make a sound art piece where there are sensors on the ground and the closer you are to them a sound will play louder and louder. Having a limited circular area of maybe 1 meter where a sensor could pick up if someone is close enough to the center to play a sound. How close you are to the center of the ring where the sensor is would determine the volume of the audio. There would be about 6 of these rings that would slightly overlap. Any ideas on what sensors and or microcontrollers I would need for this. I'm completely new to this and any help or insight would be amazing.

I don't know how well the description of my idea is so if there are any questions please ask me.

Thanks, Adam.

Maybe something like a theremin, which uses RF to detect variations. Or an ultrasonic senor? Or on optical sensor.
