silicon die polish

Does anyone have any idea what is the manufacturing process for what is underneath the black blob? I am talking about toys which generally generate some kind of music.

Can anyone recommend any manufacturers?

Thanks

Hi,

as far as I understand, u are talking about chips without package.

Chip is produced by semiconductor foundry.

U make wirebonding of this chip on the board and then cover by black blob.

and what is that black blob. what is its purpose. what is it made of

Thanks for your replies. I have found out this technology is refered to as "Chip On Board". Some information can be found from google. Still need manufacturers.

Hi,

You shold write to a fab. The fabs do not always do the packaging, but they can tell you where to go.

The black blob is the globe-top, an exopy resin used to protect the wirebonds and if you use flip-chip assembly you can just put on the board the die (something similar to microbga).

For all this assembly method the big difference is volume!!
Do you need some prototypes or volume production?

it's epoxy. it can be etched with hot nitric+sulfuric acid and not much else. most SEM houses can jet etch your part for less than $50. doing it by hand is not easy, not to mention dangerous.
i really recommend getting it jet etched if you want to open some up.

as for the process, i imagine it's cheap 2um CMOS or even cheaper 5um bipolar. the little song chips need mostly storage and a dac, so probably CMOS. the little piano chips are a tone generator and some analog and control circuitry.

why do you ask?

Thanks you verymuch for your comments. The request was for a chip that could make a number of different sounds depending on input. similar to many children toys but the application was for adults in this case. I have now located several Chinese manudfacturers.

Hi, normally in toy industries, it use this method (epoxy) to protect the dice. And it is very cheap cost.

If you are interested in the sound/voice chip you can pm me , may be i give some info. to you !
