Project on Water Level Indicator

Dear Friends,
We are working on the project of Water Level Alarm and indicator..
We have also completed our project...
But, we want to implement the system at home..
Since the circuit needs to be placed above the tank & alarm needs to be placed at home, we are requiring long wires from circuit to the alarm(say wires of length about 7-8 feet)

The connecting wires we are using are multistand wires, normally used for small circuits..
Now, the question is, is there any need to use more thicker wires?
Or, can we increase the dc battery voltage upto 12-15 volts, so that the signal can reach the required distance?

forgive me if I am wrong but,
some wire manufactorers provide the Resistance per foot of the wire, you could find the total resistance of the wire at 8ft and calculate. Is this a cable similar to UTP interior twisted cables ? .
But i dont think that there is going to be any problem, its a very short distance. Even a USB (a good one) cable could do the job (with some difficulty though)
Through the wire is it going to pass a signal voltage or not (ie a relay)?
If not, it is going to be allright (If the cable triggers the alarm it will do the job easily)

using some spl low resistance wire must suit you but as the badtall says it is better to just use the wire you are using and if the voltage is going to be low try to use some buffers

8ft suits independent houses and not apartments so pls try to implement buffers as they can enable you to increase the range of alarm over a large distance
