Programming pic to count pulses

I am trying to write a code that would count heart pulses for 15 seconds and multiply the answer by 4. This would give me the beats per minute. I've already made the heart pulse sensor. I just want a better understanding on how to make the micro controller count the pulses for 15 seconds.
PLEASE HELP!
