ISP programmers don't work sometimes when you use internal
RC-osc. and reset generator. You have to use parallel programming
like STK500, GALEP-4 this is cheap universal programmer which
cover all AVR microcontrollers(and many other)
I had problems to reprogram ATMEGA8 and ATTYNI26 even using
original STK500 from Atmel. When I bought GALEP-4 everything
was fine. The price is attractive - 300 US for more than 2000 devices!!!
avreal32 just solved this problem with int osc .. the programmer itself generates clock for mcu .. see -o0 option, so you does not need any osc at mcu at all during programming phase ;0)
