Problem in port accesing

HI,
i want to do a time critical tasks in turboc which also involves the RS232 port communication.Since i faced a time issue, i had a thought that this may due to running c in windows mode in which so many other application may utilize the CPU and may become soft real system.So i planned to run it in DOS mode....Here the RS232 COM Port is not opened and i couldn't do further.Could any one help me on this....
