Primary RC snubber needed for 500W Half Bridge SMPS

This 500W half-bridge (schematic on page 3) has an RC snubber across the primary (R1, C7)

This snubber is explained at Top of middle column of page 2.


-Why would they bother with such a dissipative snubber?

-Surely it would be better to simply put Ultra fast diodes across the switching FETs and let the leakage energy go back into the supply capacitors?
