It seems straightforward enough, though if you used
a pair
of lensed phototransistors / photodiodes their inherent
directionality might not need the separator (if you mounted
them at skewed angles).
Two pullup resistors and a comparator, and you've got your
left/right answer.
Consider, that the "separator" has a size of a few percent of the 433 MHz wavelength. It's screening effect can be compared
to a nano particle in visible light, the latter is simply shining around it.
That't not the way to design antennas with directivity.
