I had to design cooler for a CCD imager array long time ago. I used two-stage device to cool the CCD downto -40C to decrease the CCD dark current in order to permit for about half hour integration time. It was fun project. Don't forget the proper thermal heat-sink for the hot side of the cooler and minimal heat links between the hot and the cold stage. The efficiency of this thing is not very good In my case I just solder the hot stage to the heat sink and glue the CCD directly to the cold plate of the peltier. The leads were strung using thin manganin wire over a springy heat intercept thermally attached to the mid stage. Naturally everything has been instaled into a hermetic enclosude filled with nytrogen at athmosperic pressure to avoid the water wapor on the CCD. I had to use gas filled container because the place this thing were supposed to operate had no way to support vacuum pumps and stuf, what increases the heat loss due to convection.
