you use few components sold by local TV and radio repairer. and finish off
why waste money. store the money for a real pickit2 or pickit3 as and when your interest grows and can afford. keep fund for hobby that way. a;ll tyou need is a com port 8 pin db male connector
few wires , a small general purpose pcb if you can wire using jumpers
even pcb making is waste
for making one time use
even one can breadboard a circuit of this simplicity

its really a good idea, i will use general purpose pcb..
you are right that i should save money for PIC KIT2 or PIC KIT3..

If it's cheaper and you really need it to be, then of course, build that. I've had really bad experiences using JDM programmers, frying chips, stuff like that.
If it's really tested, then go ahead.
Plugging the pickit2 in a breadboard isn't a big deal, you get a 6x1 pin header, and push the pins a bit more into the plastic body, so you get equal lengths on both sides. Both the breadboard and the header receptacle can get a grip of it, if you do that.

Don't get scared !!
This design is much superior as adjudged by few experts . i have been constantly using it for may months, if not years. Only precaution , dont assume 12V is 12V from any adopter/wallbrick, unless it is a regulated one.
In my case i apply 12V from smps adopter.

Well, i'm glad it works, and really hope it will work for the OP here. Serial ports will stay around for a while, at least with personal computers, so yeah, why not use it?
Isn't the device support list limited with these kind of programmers?

I hope that it would make the user happy. The phenomenon of updating is there even with microchip, i suppose. Most students , wont use these devices once their curriculum is completed and unless one chooses the micro controllers as a hobby, the job doent not need all these items.
Of late many people jump into IT related JOBs.

i didnt agree with you.. in other country except PAKISTAN may be true but in my country if some one work with 8051 or controller ,he proceed him self with controller .many of student works for free lancer..i think its a good business and a good job..
but the bad thing is that in my country people dont like to share their idea's to other's .
that's why its lagging from development .

i love this website because people share there idea their experiences their way of working..

that seems a board-to-board connector to me, same thing could be done with a simple pin header too.

you can see the large pin 6 way male ,right angled at the end of the pickit2 board, i suppose. one side pickit2 other side breadboard.

in mazidi book he write code for pic18f458.
is it good to work with pic18f458???

i am not much into software.
I know that you need to have a cealr understanding of the chip, perhaps from datasheet.
I rtemember maizidi has dealt with one of these chips
you may meticulusly follow that as a recommended text book and all the exercises may be done with sincereity and i wish you best of luck becoming slowly the expert fof the future.

hy all. if you only want to burn [program] a pic 18fxx i think you can build a JDM programmer. just watch to use the corect pins for programing. all you need to build costs less than 10 usd and i think it can do the job. you will also need a computer. this programer works only on serial port. google for more details. i can build in eagle he schematic and pcb for the one i use now. and if you want a clone of the pickit-2 i can also upload the files somewhere. the components for pickit: ~20 usd. you will still need to burn the chip[ again JDM programmer or another pickit ].
Bottom line: i guess a JDM is ok for start.

you might use a DOT pattern board.
get hold of 2 to 3 metres of insulated thin wire,
place the components as shown in the artwork
and then start soldering to the pads
later you can use the wire for interconnecting pin to pin following the track patern/
that is simplest , i suppose.

By now you might have listred the components
check what all you may have, otherthings you can locally buy from any radio technician.

hello sir i had read plz post pickit2 clone schematic and all files related this.till now i used JDM programmer but same thing happen with me i replace my PC and serial port become invisible .& last time i build one pickit2 clone but i failed. so plz upload ur pickit2 which one is updated.

did you install pickit2v2.61 driver software along with .net. please download from microchip site and do it

I had made tens of such boards fro friends and students. it should work.
A photo of assembled board is shown here. You might find few jumpers and one mosfet mounted on solder side.
thus they appear missing on component side.
