Availability is always an issue, I normally include a statement in these regards, I just get tired of typing it for every post.

However, even if the pricing were reversed I still would recommend the PIC16F887 as it offers considerably more features, especially if the OP has limited funding and can only afford to purchase a few microcontrollers.


element14 (India) offers the following pricing:

PIC16F887-I/P 192.50 Rs
PIC16F877A-I/P 498.96 Rs

Although the ratio is similar, the pricing is roughly 80% to 100% markup from those from MicrochipDirect and the shipping fees are not known as an Indian destination address would have to be entered.


Futurlec offers the devices at the following prices, Air Mail with a $5 shipping fee Air Mail to those regions for orders under $29 USD:

PIC16F887-I/P $2.50 USD
PIC16F877A-I/P $4.50 USD

These prices are more inline with MicrochipDirect pricing.


There are several Chinese suppliers listing on eBay which will ship to India for a modest fee, who offer the PIC16F877A in the $3 USD range for single quantities, although their pricing for the PIC16F887 is double that of MicrochipDirect.


Out of curiosity, what is the pricing for single quantities for the PIC16F877A and PIC16F887 from your local suppliers?

Yes. Like I mentioned in the previous post, I too would recommend the PIC16F887.

The PIC16F877A is about $2.40. The PIC16F887 is about $4.50.

The price difference is remarkedly larger at local stores than the ones mentioned by element14, etc. For example: https://probots.co.in/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=78_82&products_id=161

Often I find that the prices mentioned by the 'large' vendors are the prices in USA converted to local currency.

Anyways, I do not think the discussion regarding pricing should continue, as it is after all up to the OP to decide. And I too would recommend using the PIC16F887.

Hi,

As I said in your other post yesterday the 16F877A does not have an Internal oscillator , you must use an external crystal and caps - please read the 877A datasheet as previously mentioned.
 

How to find out whether a PIC has a internal oscillator using data sheet (under which section)?
 

Go to the oscillator section of the datasheet. It will mention whether the PIC has internal oscillator or not. PIC16F877A does not.

Most of the times, it is mentioned in one of the first few pages as well under the microcontroller features. However, you should refer to the oscillator section to be certain.
