PIC to PC through RS-232

How long can be this type of conection?

The MCU this to less than 10 meters of the PC. Can I use RS-232 ?.

How susceptible it can be to the noise? . Not this in an industry.

Thanks in advance

hi

yes you can do this if shielding is proper i have done this up to 20 metters
with the help of sheilding

Re: PIC to PC through RS-232

With two RS232/485 converters you can use connection longer than 1000ft

Re: PIC to PC through RS-232

Dear xirix:

Do you have a schematic from an rs232/485 converter and which IC you recommend? I don't need insulation, but if not so much complicate I do it.

Thanks to all

Dear Fragance

I think that a proper shielding is connect the shield at one opposite site to the hearth_gound, and the other site not connected.

Thanks

Re: PIC to PC through RS-232

Maxim has a lot of converters...but you can try "classic" 75LS176 from Texas Instr.
BB Electronics (**broken link removed**) has some applications for 485 interfacing.

used cable which come with shield wire and used DB9 conectors and conect the shield wire with the metal part of the DB9 conectors or outer
body that it's keep in mind this can be done on both ebd of DB9 conectors

Yes but at which baudrate ?
Probably 2400 Bd or less ?

concerning cable length and baud rates of RS232 read this:

Re: PIC to PC through RS-232

Normally RS 232 is able to work up to 20mt (according to the standard). This limitation is due more to a problem with electric level than to the speed: today every RS232 is able to sample the incoming signal up to 16 times the maximum speed and recover the front.
