What's that modification for?
I got this problem with JDM and IC-Prog..I made a JDM to be connected on IC-Prog via a 9 pins serial cable. Then I found out my laptop has no SERIAL PORT only LPT1 and USB..
What can I do?

I think the only simple thing you can do is buying a usb to rs232 converter or a PCMCIA card wiith serial port. it shouldn't be too expensive.

Modification on circuit is to raise VPP voltage to 13,3V because some serial ports can't supply enough current to let charge pump to raise to exact PIC's VPP. some Pic's are really sensitive and you can't program it unless you don't reach thata voltage. I had problems with PIC16F876A instead PIC16F84 has non problems.

Use the setting for TAIT Serial Programmer and check the Invert MLCR and Invert VCC..
That's it..
