PIC and buck converter

I am not sure how the title is related to the content of your post ie. buck converter v constant current source, but if you would like to control a current source by PIC microcontroller you can use PWM (pulse width modulation) + LPF (low pass filter) or A/D converter to generate constant voltage and apply this voltage to an opamp based voltage-to-current converter (exaple below) ..

I need something along the lines of a battery charger, constant current while stepping down the voltage. Microchip/Atmel have app notes on the topic; i was interested to see if anybody implemented something similar and how reliable/safe the firmware was.
