PCB layout advice

Hi,

I've always found that the PCB layout is at least for me the hardest part. So I'd like to hear what are your steps in successfull layout and smoothest trace routings?

So far I've found the best approach to be, first draw the board edge, then place the connectors on sides, MCU on center and then from schematics check what components need to be closest to each other. Still I end up in impossible routings and need to start all over again which is frustrating. Even though my designs are simple and doesn't have tens and tens of components.

So my question is, is there any tricks, or is it just so that pro's have the ability to see the layout in their mind and just do it?

Hi,

First make the schematics complete.

If there is a requirement for connector location, then place them.
Then do the most critical schematic part first.
I don't agree with your opinion that this causes impossible routing.

Like a lot of engineering things, they can be taught to you many times, but until you do them personally with your hands, you will not understand them in detail. Persistence and practice are the main words. Maintain low expectations. Your first board design will have lots of problems. Your 10th board design will have fewer, but will still have some. You'll never get rid of them all. In PCB design always is something that can be improved.
The circuit schematic is the first step in PCB design, and is very important to have here a good concept, because any mistake or wrong approach will be translated in the PCB layout.
Component placement, first-step routing, routing verification, are the next steps.
If is a simple schematic try to use 2 layers PCB and place the components just on one side. Today, most PCB manufacturers have no price difference between 1 layer and 2 layers PCBs.
