Hi All,
I'm a beginner in PCB design field. I've one doubt regarding some form of design. Actually What is the purpose of using spike form of routing..?
 

Hi,

Its a cheap way of overvoltage protection.
With high voltage you will see a spark from one spike to the other.

The spark voltage depends on time, frequency, humidity, air pressure, manufacturing precision, and dirt (also flux residuals) on the pcb and so on.
Because of that it is discussed to be a not reliable protection method.

Hello ,

manufacturer of varistors usually have application note on their websites.
Varistor, MOV, POV, zdiodes, transzorb diodes, snubber network, ferrite beads, .... are keywords.

With google you may fide a huge ammount of information. Thousands of pages, i think too much to write in this foruum.

But you are allways welcome to ask specific questions.

There are overvoltage / surge protection ICs available as well. I use Linear's LT4356 on several designs which provides protection up to 100Vdc.

The LTC4366 will go beyond that, up to 500V. Check out their options. Those ICs paired with transient voltage suppresion diodes (TVS) will provide reliable protection.
