PC to PC connection using modems

both PC have modems.

can we connect them together using phone cables?

Added after 7 minutes:

can we just connect together and use AT commands to control the modem to exchange data?
 

i think you can use telnet that equip on windows pc
 

you can use "hyper terminal" if you have windows OS . and onther way you can install incoming call for one of the computer and then call it by the other one .onther way you can use some other software ....

you are planing to do that using the normal telephone service or just puting one cable to conect these 2 computers ?????
because you if you are planing to do the second, I think that its just not work becouse you don´t have the line signals like the -48V and the ring tone, if you can do that please let me know that it work, i tried and didn´t have sucess.
