Generally, a deep N-Well is surrounded by a P+ guard ring for noise suppression.

I was wondering if the distance of the guard ring to the N-Well can have an effect on its effectiveness. For example, can in a 40nm technology, the P+ ring be to close to the DNW. Do I place it as close to the DNW as possible, or is it better to have a space (example, 1um)?

A P+ guard ring outside of the deep N-Well serves to catch straying electrons injected by the N-Well into the p-region. In order to be efficient, it should be as close to the deep N-Well as allowed by DRC rules.
