Output voltage of DAC is limied to reference voltage?

Hello,
We wish to use the MCP4716 DAC, but don't want the output to ever be higher than the reference voltage that we will feed to it. (we will set gain to 1).
Will this be the case?, assuming that we select the VREF pin as being the reference..ie the output cannot possibly be higher in voltage than the reference voltage, no matter what data we feed to the DAC?

That seems to be true, however , in case of any fault, you might consider possible faults and consider using case temperture feedback to limit the LED drive current along with PTC..

Be careful with your wording, a gain of 0 on these devices means "no gain" and a setting of 1 means "double the output".

If you mean the DAC is run with no gain at the output, the maximum voltage is the reference voltage. Essentially you are tapping into a point along a chain of resistors between the reference voltage and ground. The tap position is set by the value you program into the device and with maximum input you are connecting directly to the reference voltage.
