Other vendors than altera/xilinx???

Someone has experience in other vendors FPGAs than from Altera or Xilinx?

Are their prices in any way near the ones from Xilinx/Altera?
Or are they targetted mainly for specific areas like forwarding engines/PCI interfacing (like quicklogic)?

Besides...distributors/manufacturers tend to always tell that their products are the best/cheapest/whatever...

Davorin.. I use Actel FPGA for many reasons.. Flash memory part of the actel chips let the part be 'configured' from power up. 150K and 300K gates let reasonable design sizes beeing implemented without fuss or trouble. the software tool chain is good and not too cumbersome. As far as security goes Actel has proven track record.
I use as well Altera for 'small' CPLD (3000 serie) as they are flash as well.

Also the programmer can't be self-build I think...

Well...I've tried twice to contact local distributor for Actel FPGAs...no answers at all...so doesn't look they're interested...

Hi Davorin,

Besides Xilinx and Altera (2 biggest and broadest portfolio so far) you have Actel and Lattice. I know Lattice for years from CPLDs and SPLD (broadest portfolio and highest performance). A couple of years ago they acquired Lucent FPGA's. These are very telecom centric and not as cheap as Cyclone and Spartans but you can get higher performance out of it. Also, they developped their own FPGA (XPGA). This family has EEPROM on board and is therefore non-volatile, instant-on (very nice feature). ON top of that they included some serdes channels for serial communication chip to chip and board to board.
Prices start at low 20's (of course depending on the quantities).
If you look at their website, you will notice they announced some new families (look for Fujitsu deal) - Very promissing!

although it 's fpga was not based on sram,
it 's security works well!!
