Just wondering, can an op-amp be used as a buffered voltage-divider instead of introducing gain in a circuit.

give the output of the voltage divider to a voltage follower... thus the voltage dividers output gets buffered as well as is independent of the load since the input current of op amp is zero...

An op amp used in an inverting amplifier configuration can have any gain including less than one. Thus is can be used as a buffered voltage divider.

But the gain will be negative. So be careful if your circuit doesn't have reverse protect. I will use the op amp as an adder of two or more other op amps with both inverting and non-inverting gains.

why would you want to do a divider with an op-amp, when it can be done much more cheaply with resistors?

Because any resistive load on that simple resistor divider will mess up your division accuracy, not to mention it might be fairly high impedance node which might be susceptible to noise. You want to use the op-amp as a buffer so you can drive your reference over wider varying loads.
