I have a custom device that only gets noise when I plug the laptop in. I suspect somthing to do with the grounding circuitry in the laptop and have seen the same issue with several different brands. I use the device when running tests at customers' sites so I don't have the liberty of modifying the grounding circuit I plug into. Would an isolation (optical) usb cable help? The cable I currently have has a ferrite bead.
