I guess, the ratio of chip area to power handling capacity (restricted due to the small package) has been optimized for the said application. Also the low gate threshold voltage and maximum Vgs rating may be less-than-optimal for some SMPS applications. But yes, it can be used.

This mos has a large chip and low RDS but when using in SMPS larger chip doesn't always mean lower loss.
This is because of larger input and output capacitance that makes high speed switching inefficient.
for high switching frequency like 100khz there is a trade off between RDS and output capacitance and diode recovery losses.
