Need help with DC motor drive with autobrake

Hi,

I've been trying to design a start/stop unidirectional DC motor driver to help students (mainly junior high to high school) learn about various hardware devices (BJTs, FETs)

I successfully got the drive and brake to work up to 24V, thanks to a lot of googling and searching. But, I have a serious issue when there is high speed switching or switch "chattering" which causes a fatal breakdown of the N-channel FET, especially at the higher voltages.

I was hoping someone would know of a way to keep the great solid brake function while safeguarding the FET from being destroyed by transients? (at this point I'm assuming that's the cause, not really sure why though)
