need help to become hardware Desigener

I am working in PCB layout as well ad signal integrity engineer. now I want to learn hardware design basics to became hardware designer
can anybody tell what actually hardware designers will do and what is the flow chart for that
is there any books will guide me to reach my goal plz suggest
