can anybody tell me whether triac can be used to switch capacitor (1-ph) to power line to control power factor.

Triacs can be used for switching provided the voltage is AC. You may also consider using BTA12-600, BTA16-600 ot BTA42 with higher ratings. Cheers

thanks for reply,

here i am using bt138 triac. by following app notes i will try to calculate snubber ckts but my doubt is whether a triac(BT138) can be used to switch a capacitor (power cap) to AC MAINS(240V). in every app notes it is given that load may be inductive or resistive or a combination of R and L, but no where mentioned it as capacitive, this raises my doubt. can u pls explain me breifly

The triacs like BT12-600 comes with in built snubbers. Consider those...Cheers
